PSO PC Client Update
I'm very pround to announce that in a rather unusual turn of events, I've managed to actually fix a bug in PSO itself and issue a new client. A new pso.exe file is now available which fixes the map 6 bug which previously made FAMITSU-MAXIMUM ATTACK- unplayable in Ultimate mode. I've managed to fix the bug in pso.exe itself, so there is no longer a need to use special trainers or loaders to perform this patch every time you want to play the game with the fix.
All of the pso.exe files in the PC Downloads section of the site have been updated, so you can get the pso.exe file that best suits your needs from there. The update will also be available from the Sylverant patch server in a day or so (if you launch the game using the autorun and have the online.exe set to connect to Sylverant). Note that if you want to use the patch server method, you'll only receive the update if you're using one of the "vanilla" pso.exe files found in the PC Downloads section of the main site. If you've patched pso.exe for other things like cussing, you'll need to download the new pso.exe manually and then re-apply the other patches you used. Since the patch server doesn't give you a choice in the patching process, we're not going to set it to blindly overwrite any pso.exe file with a vanilla one that contains the fix. If you're using any of the six vanilla pso.exe files from the main site (standard, window mode, window + mouse, Vista/7, Vista/7 window mode, Vista/7 window mode + mouse), the patch server will send you the same pso.exe file updated with the fix.
Once people have had a chance to update their clients, FAMITSU-MAXIMUM ATTACK- will be unlocked in Ultimate mode.
Also, since this has been proven to work on PC, it may be possible to make a fix for the Dreamcast...

Re: PSO PC Client Update
You fixed lol?
anyway I think ives missed the potential of what such a modification is capable of doing.

Re: PSO PC Client Update
I was the one who had the idea of compacting the table to make everything fit without changing the file names, after all. For once I didn't have to have you do anything for me except suggest potential early changes to see if PSO would be angry at having the tables altered.
If you're referring to the "potential" to add new maps to the game, that's kind of a pain, since there isn't room in the exe to add more without changing the existing filenames. Besides, nobody's released any information on how to create new maps.

Re: PSO PC Client Update
Is the pso.exe from the download section already set to sylverant, or do I have to patch the IP?

Re: PSO PC Client Update
The new ones are all patched already.
Also, the files are on the Patch Server, but they're not going to update just yet for all of the binaries that were on PSO Palace previously (they update for the ones that were at DC-Talk previously -- which did actually have additional patches (v1 name fix, swear filter disable) that I didn't restore on the files).

Re: PSO PC Client Update
I think its just because the server side has not yet unlocked the Famitsu quest.
They will be unlocked once the new update pso.exe has been installed by everyone.
At least this is my understandings, but correct me if I'm wrong.
I'm a dreamcaster so it doesn't make any difference for me lol

I have faith that it's possible.
Re: PSO PC Client Update
Nope, you've got it completely correct. Updating it without a large portion of users on the new client would only cause more problems than it helps. Unfortunately, its not possible to detect the version of the client in any meaningful way in the quest, a judgement call has to be made on when to do the server-side update of the quest.eugene19 wrote:I think its just because the server side has not yet unlocked the Famitsu quest.

Y U NO REEDIN' MAH POZT?
Sadly, I can only do so many things at once. I can't fix the game and the quest at the same time.
Re: PSO PC Client Update
Wow. That's awesome. It's another step in the process of deconstructing PSO, I suppose.

Re: PSO PC Client Update
When BlueCrab gets back from vacation, I'm hoping he can teach me how to make CodeBreaker codes. I know how to apply the fix to the Dreamcast, but I don't know how to make it into a code.
Re: PSO PC Client Update
Hey Ives,
i am pretty much into coding as i tried to learn as much as possible in re-creating lost characters/items/game results when my dc broke/chars got corrupted and so on....
If you like you can ask me and i'll have a look if i remember or find my old notes to either make the code for you or teach you how to make it your own.

Since BlueCrab never really goes on serious vacations (Yay!), we've actually been working on it already. I may be able to try my first attempt tonight.
Re: PSO PC Client Update
Codebreaker codes means I'll have to do a vmu-swap, right?

Re: PSO PC Client Update
If there was a code, yes. I just spent another hour trying various variations, and none of the codes work. If the code is enabled, PSO won't even boot, so the odds of doing this on DC aren't looking very good.
Re: PSO PC Client Update
Why not simply make a new Dreamcast disk with the fix in it? Then we could all download it. We wouldn't have to worry about any codes, except for the connect code then. (Even better if you could auto connect to sylverant) I would really like it if you could make two of them: one with ep and one without ep.

Re: PSO PC Client Update
The game's executable is encrypted, which makes it impossible to modify it to connect automatically or apply the map fix. It's possible to decrypt the executable, but then you also have to figure out how to patch some of the game's other files to make the game still boot when the executable isn't encrypted anymore. I'd like to have a disc with the fix included some day, but I also want to be able to fix official copies somehow, too.
Re: PSO PC Client Update
So the only thing that would work for GD-ROM copies is a codebreaker code?
You couldn't modify the save data file (some binary injection or something from the patch server) and work backwards from there?

Re: PSO PC Client Update
Actually, we couldn't get a Codebreaker code to work at all for the map fix patch... The only guess we have with regard to that was that the code was just too long or something...Moopthehedgehog wrote:So the only thing that would work for GD-ROM copies is a codebreaker code?

Also, the Dreamcast version doesn't use the patch server at all, so that's out of the question (otherwise, it would be pretty easy to do). There is supposedly a patch packet (similar to what was used by PSOload on the Gamecube) in the Dreamcast versions of PSO, but I have no idea how it works, and intercepting PSOload's packets didn't particularly help that much. Even that would be a bad solution, since it would require users to essentially connect twice (which would be quite annoying for people using one of the DC-PC server solutions for dialup).
Re: PSO PC Client Update
Not only would you have to connect twice, but you'd have to sit and wait for a good five minutes for the new executable to download every time you tried to connect, heh. Dial up would not like that solution.
