Please Read: Time For A Change
I realize that this is long and probably melodramatic, but I consider this one of the most important decisions I have made, and as such I feel it is important to express my thinking in precise terms. I hope that if you're reading this, you will read it all.
SCHTServ has been my home for the last seven years, and it is amazing what Schthack was able to do in preventing PSO from being forgotten. Unfortunately, his successor has not always upheld the same standards. This is not to say I am ungrateful to Crono; after all, he could easily have refused to host a ship dedicated to Ver.1/2 players. Even so, it has been a constant uphill battle trying to keep updates flowing, and despite my best efforts to make the update process as quick and painless as possible by doing all of the configuration myself so that he would only need to copy/paste files and restart servers, I have still had to beg, whine, and harass him to update.
Before the new server outage, he also refused to update the Offline Quest ship at all, and with what was perhaps the last straw, he also decided to change the server DNS without warning. Yes, even when SCHTServ comes back online, PSO PC will still not be able to connect, because gsproduc.ath.cx is no longer updated. As a result, all old pso.exe files, including the one in the "official" Torrent, are useless, as is the online.exe. While I could remake the Torrent and the online.exe to accomodate this change, I am tired of fighting a losing battle against someone who has made it so clear that he doesn't really care about the Ver.2 community.
With these things in mind, this post officially announces that I have formed an alliance with BlueCrab and the Sylverant PSO Server project, and he has graciously allowed me to run a ship on his shipgate. PSO Palace now has its own ship, Altimira, which contains my quest updates from the SCHTServ DC/PC Only ship. It is therefore my hope and intention to continue to provide quest updates in an environment where the time I contribute will actually be appreciated and the quests I create will actually be playable when I finish them.
While some people might misconstrue this action as a vain attempt on my part to boost my ego by being an administrator of my own ship, I think it is fair to say that I have been extremely patient with the situation at SCHTServ. I have waited years for things to improve, and they have not. While I feel conflicted over allying myself with another server project, I believe there must come a point when I try to put my loyalty to Schthack aside and do what I think is best for the Ver.2 community. SCHTServ is no longer the place it once was, and if this latest attack should teach us anything, it is that the petty disagreements among BB players have now spread to such a degree that they are negatively impacting DC, PC, and even GC users. Even maintaining separate ships is no longer a sufficient means of protecting ourselves from their problems. While I dislike the "PSO Drama" expression, I think it is safe to say this latest attack would not be happening if it wasn't for the status of SCHTServ as the biggest BB server. I, like all Ver.2 players, have suffered the ridicule and disapproval of those who do not understand why we play an "inferior" older version, and I was willing to endure that scorn in the name of keeping the community together.
Yet now, we have no community. For the first time in a decade, we have spent a Christmas without PSO, and knowing that the server will come back online again eventually is cold comfort, since it is certain that the administration will be no more willing to listen to us in the future than they have been in the past. As such, I do not intend to return to SCHTServ on a regular basis whenever the server is again online. I do not consider this a temporary measure while SCHTServ is down; I consider it a complement, if not a replacement for DC/PC Only.
I expect that my server will probably have some players while SCHTServ is down, but will this last after the attacks stop? I do not know. If you feel as I do that SCHTServ is no longer a friendly place for our kind, perhaps you will join me in this new venture. Even if players remain after SCHTServ reopens, will BlueCrab someday lose his hosting or terminate his project in the future, thus forcing me to crawl back to SCHTServ? It is possible. I do not know how this decision will impact the Ver.2 community on SCHTServ; perhaps I overestimate what people think of what I do, and everyone will leave the moment SCHTServ reopens. I hope this will not be the case, but it is not my choice to make. All I can do is try to serve the Ver.2 community in the same way I always have. While not everyone has agreed with the patches and other content I have generated for the game, I can only hope that people see my intent -- to support the game as best I can. This could be the worst mistake I have made in the past decade, or it could be the start of a better place for Ver.2 players. Most likely, it will be something in between. All I know is that I have been feeling discontent for some time, and this was the best solution I could devise. If you have similar sentiments, I hope you will join me.
Addendum:
As of March 2011, gsproduc.ath.cx is still being updated. Why Crono changed his mind and how long it will last is unknown, but it is worth noting that one of our grievances has, for the moment, been addressed.

Re: Please Read: Time For A Change
I wanted to just chime in a little bit as I see it, and to kinda introduce myself to anyone who doesn't know me already...
So, as you probably can tell, I'm BlueCrab, the author of Sylverant. I've been involved in the Dreamcast Homebrew community for years now (since about 2002), and was an avid PSO fan back on Sega's server. PSO was just one of those games that I could never put down, and I've logged many hours into it by now (both in just normal playing and of course working on Sylverant). In addition to Sylverant, I work on other projects like KallistiOS (the major homebrew SDK for the Dreamcast), CrabEmu (a Sega Master System/Game Gear emulator for Mac OS X, Linux, and Dreamcast), and Yabause (a Sega Saturn emulator for all kinds of targets, including Dreamcast). Also, I'm a member of the administration of DCEmulation, one of the biggest Dreamcast Homebrew/Emulation sites out there. I'm currently a graduate student, working toward a Masters Degree in Computer Science. But, enough about me... Onto the whys and hows of Sylverant.
Just to give a bit of background on Sylverant, I started it about two years ago now as an open-source PSO Server based originally on Sodaboy's Tethealla server (ported to *nix, and cleaned up a bit). While it wallowed around on my hard drive for about half a year as a BB-only server, I really wanted to see an open-source server for earlier versions of the game, specifically for the Dreamcast versions (this was before Fuzziqer/Kohle released the source to newserv -- which is itself focused mostly on the Gamecube versions of PSO). I begun researching a few things and putting a few things together on my own, and started to work toward that goal. By the end of August 2009, I had something that was starting to become stable and actually had support for DCv1 (actually that was all it supported at that time, the BB code had been thrown away completely, along with everything else based directly on Tethealla). I announced the project on 9/9/09, and the rest is history. Since then, Sylverant has grown to support DCv2, PC, and Gamecube (Episodes I & II), and all kinds of improvements have been made. I personally have no intention of giving up on this project, and I really just want to see it be the best open-source PSO server the world has ever seen (not that it has much competition in the open-source PSO server arena).
Aleron Ives has continuously provided input into new ideas for features and for bug fixes for Sylverant, and for that I'm eternally grateful. In fact, in the past few days, there have been several code changes to Sylverant that were all Ives' idea to start with (and there's plenty more coming in the future, that's for sure). There are plenty of other people to thank, such as the guy who's hosting the server for me: http://thewaffleiron.net/ . Without people like Schthack and Fuzziqer/Kohle, I'd have never been able to get Sylverant off the ground.
I'm committed to maintaining this project as long as I can. I have no intentions to leave the community or abandon the project. I hope that you all can trust me with that, and come together to make the Sylverant community as awesome as it can be.
Don't hesitate to put in any suggestions you may have for Sylverant, as I'm open to all kinds of suggestions of how to improve it (and of course any bug reports, let me know about too).

Re: Please Read: Time For A Change
I really like this server, On Schtserv, it takes like 5 years to finally pick up an item but here, you pick it up the moment you press A. I hope this place becomes much better than Schtserv. From what I seen, this place doesn't have much BRs on here so thats a good thing.
BlueCrab, would it possible to run events on this server? I would really like some, or hell maybe some fanmade events like that Xmas giveaway event I had on Schtserv for GC/v2.
Even tho it would not be legit, but do I really need to pull out that whole Sega Standard legit argument? xD

Re: Please Read: Time For A Change
That probably is partially due to location of the server/latency and such. Also, its rather quiet and all, which helps in that, too.EvilMag wrote:I really like this server, On Schtserv, it takes like 5 years to finally pick up an item but here, you pick it up the moment you press A. Ives and I have discussed possibilities for the future, and like I said I'm always open to new ideas. So, hopefully we'll see some events and such. Feel free to organize fan-events too, if you want. I recommend posting about them not only here but also at the forum for Sylverant as well. Heck, if they become big enough and such, maybe they'll make frontpage news at the Sylverant website.BlueCrab, would it possible to run events on this server? Re: Please Read: Time For A Change
For the time being, Christmas mode is enabled on Altimira, and Christmas Catastrophe is available. Since we missed all of December, I think I will leave it up through Friday or so. Get those Christmas Cards while you can! Melvin needs help.
Re: Please Read: Time For A Change
Ives, you need to do something with your ship it has some latency issues. Me and Colin have been DCing on your ship all night. xD

Re: Please Read: Time For A Change
:'( Nnnuuu... I sent a memo to BlueCrab, but I should see him this afternoon hopefully.
Re: Please Read: Time For A Change
Yeah, there was some serious delay picking items up as well. Would take a good 5 seconds or so. We'd see each other freeze on our screens when the other person said they were fine. Then our text sometimes wouldn't show. We'd pipe back to the city or warp to the next area and we'd get d/c'd. We even d/c'd randomly just walking around on the ship a few times. Mag said he had trouble logging back into your ship several times when he kept getting disconnected.
I went to Crab's ship and tried playing there for a minute. Items picked up the second I pressed the button. Every thing seemed just fine, so I guess it wasn't the server.
Hopefully whatever it is, is fixed soon. It's a bit disappointing to finally have a place to play online after schtserv was down for so long, then get denied by extreme lag, lol.
*EDIT* It's 3:30 A.M. PST. I just tried again, went to Forest 1 and everything is just dandy. Items are getting picked up the second I press the button and I've yet to d/c. Every thing seems good to go once again.
*EDIT 2* Finished my Forest run. It was uneventful minus one thing. I was apparently kicked from the server for attempting to "take un-legit items out of the bank." I guess I'd better remember that next time I'm tekking another Red Saber, lol.
>_>
>_>
*EDIT 3* What in the hell, son?!
Apparently I was kicked, but the tekker still tekked the Red Saber to -10% Machine. (I was going to sell it for crappy stats to begin with.) I remade the game, tried to type in /legit, and it said illegit items were detected, so it wouldn't work. I sold the Red Saber, tried /legit again, and it worked...
<_>
I'm starting to think it's a good idea to not even bother with /legit all-together now. xD

Re: Please Read: Time For A Change
This is for PC players who want to connect to sylverant that have ALREADY REGISTERED their serials on Schtserv. For those who haven't, there is another method that is necessary.
Certainly. First things first, you need the ippatcher that is in the downloads section of this forum. Once you get that, place it in the same directory as your pso.exe and other files relative to pso. Then what you need to do is go here.
http://sylverant.net/account/login.php
Head there and make an account. It only takes a few seconds, and after that, head to the manage serials (or whatever option it is called that is relevant to the managing of serials and access key, lol). What you need to do here is click whichever option you choose to play on (I play PC so I would click that, etc etc). Once you get your serials. Next, go back to your ippatcher and click on it. It will bring up a small pink window that lets you put in an ip in which to connect to. Put this one in there.
67.222.144.120
That is the Ip for Sylverant's server. Now you're almost done! Now in that same folder, click on "autorun.exe" and go to online game. There will be a menu with 4 options, click start game and it will ask for your credentials that you received when you made an account before this. Put those in and a random E-mail address and click start and you should be good to go!
Please post if there are any problems, I had to rush to type this a bit lol. I'm not sure if Ives has/is planning posting a modified pso.exe that already connects to Sylverant but I'll post a few dl links that let you skip the last few steps, making it so you only have to register and put in your serials as opposed to patching your pso.exe with ippatcher.
Windowed Pso.exe patched to Sylverant
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=3OMLBOSP
I'll try to post a Fullscreen one later, megaupload is being annoying. Anyway, I really hope this guide helps. I realize that for someone who has never dealt with the ippatcher or other related tools these things can be confusing, and hopefully I was clear enough in my explanation. Just remember, if you download the patched pso.exe I posted just above this, you DO NOT have to even download ippatcher, you just have to register on the site and put in your serials and you should be good to go. Good luck!

Very strange, especially since Iselia and Altimira are both hosted on the same machine (using the same binary and all).Wing wrote:Yeah, there was some serious delay picking items up as well. Sorry about that... The legit detector will trip on items with negative percents. I'll be taking a look at it and try to fix it this week.*EDIT 2* Finished my Forest run. @ MuCast
The reason I recommend using the HOSTS file instead of ippatch is because your method won't work if you still need to register, which wiiman does. ippatch doesn't patch online.exe, so you'll get Error 3 when you try to register your serials. If you use the HOSTS file method, both pso.exe and online.exe will connect to the right place.
@ Wing
I do appreciate you testing the /legit stuff. As BlueCrab said, the detector apparently counts negative percentages as being really high (above the cap, so you get kicked) instead of reading them as really low (below the cap, so allowed). The more we test it, the better it will be. I definitely recommend keeping it off while you do transfers and such. You don't want to get accidentally kicked while you shuffle stuff around, but for normal play, we might as well try to get the kinks worked out ASAP so that people don't need to be afraid to use it. It'll be a major asset once it's working 100%, at least that's my hope and why I suggested it be implemented in the first place.

Ah ok, thanks for letting me now, I'll see if I can make a revised version of the post above a bit later on then.
edit: actually come to think about it, I've never really gone about what is listed above, so I'll just keep my earlier post for those who have already registered on schtserv.

Re: Please Read: Time For A Change
I have a very important question. Is Sylverant as stable as SCHTserv or am I going to be freezing on challenge mode 9 (or is it somewhere in between)?
Also, did you say Gamecubers are allowed to connect?
Otherwise, I can see the point of the switch. I'm not going to support or not-support this, but I will be trying it out/using it anyways, so thanks a bajeebers!
I hope that the SCHTserv people don't get about it, though,
P.S. Is the server being tweaked for Ives's EP, too?

Re: Please Read: Time For A Change
My ship has the fixed Stage 9. The others do not at this point. GC users are allowed to connect right now, but BlueCrab is going to make a server update soon that lets you restrict your ship to various versions. At some point we may try to get a full Ver.2/3 compatibility mode working, but until then there's not much point of having both of us on the same ship.
Also, the Sylverant Download Quest ship has both Hero & Daughter as well as Triad -Maximum Attack- 3 for both Dreamcast and PC.
The legit checker on my ship is configured for EP parameters.

Re: Please Read: Time For A Change
Unlike certain people, I got BlueCrab to update the DLQ ship on the first try.

Yeah, hopefully he didn't quit for good. I noticed he was registered on the dcemu forums so hopefully he knows about the server change already...I hope D:

Re: Please Read: Time For A Change
While you're there, you should see if you can grab some Dreamcast Pal v2s. You can make some serious $ selling those in the US.

The ship is very nice. A difference I noticed is when you die. You seem to drop your money, but not your weapon. This is not an inconvenience, however.
