Potential Platform Changes

Post  Aleron Ives on Mon Nov 02, 2015 2:21 pm

Well, this is a topic I never really thought I'd make, but PSO times are changing. As you may have noticed from the server status page, Sylverant has a lot more GC players now that SCHTServ is dead, and I have also been playing GC, now that I have a PC powerful enough to emulate it with Dolphin.

Ever since I opened Altimira as a place for us to play after Crono stopped updating the DC/PC Only ship on SCHTServ, I've had GC support disabled, since V2 and V3 can't reasonably play together, and Sylverant didn't have many GC players, anyway. Since then, I've started porting some of my old quest projects to GC and have plans to start some new ones, and since Altimira is the most logical place for me to put my own quests, I was wondering what everyone would think about me allowing GC to play on Altimira.

I know back in the SCHTServ days the GC population was rather mean and would make fun of us for being on Ver.2, so I really didn't want to expose our players to that kind of attitude anymore, but the GC players on Sylverant are generally much nicer than those who played on SCHTServ. All of the lobby bugs are still present, though, so you still see GC players moonwalking when they talk to the lobby counter, and since the lobby layouts themselves are so different, you can end up seeing them inside the counter, too. DC players also don't see GC players' names in white, so they can end up thinking that GC players are on Ver.2, when they really aren't. For some reason the patch to let PC users see Ver.1 names in white also works on GC players, but without it, PC incorrectly sees GC names in orange, too.

Basically, I don't want to abandon my mission statement of running a haven for the hunters of Ver.1 and 2, but I also want to have a place to put all the projects I have in mind for GC. (I have more projects in mind for Ver.2 as well, but a man has to have some variety in his quest development life. Wink) I could just put them on Iselia and leave Altimira as it is, but I want to modify existing GC quests with some of the changes I've made for Ver.2, such as camera buttons in the Endless Nightmares, and I think it would make more sense to have the special quests on Altimira than to have two copies of the same quest on Iselia.

Altimira is currently the only ship that doesn't allow GC, so should I open it up to all platforms to match the other ships, or would everyone rather keep the peace and tranquility that goes along with knowing that everybody on Altimira can play together?

I think it makes sense that Altimira keeps its tradition of having its very own unique set of quests.

Maybe you could also mention GC/V2 compatibility issues somewhere in the lobby "info boards" and also write down the server command that allows players to cross play with said bugs if they wish to do so.

Hmm, maybe I should just go ahead and do emulation on Dolphin as well. I have a GC but no broadband/modem adapter so that kinda kills that haha! I didn't think there were that many GC players coming in to play. That's great to hear, though! It is really nice to be able to see a bit more activity on the servers, that's for sure. And now that I have 4G LTE on my phone, hot spotting is not a problem anymore so now I can play online, yay! \^_^/

I agree with Treamcast as well about having Altimira having its own set of quests unique to that ship. I thought that was a very novel idea to put different quests on different ships, tbh lol But I also have not played online enough to really warrant much of an opinion. D:

As for the GC players on Altimira, I personally do not see much of a problem with that, in terms of playing with each other. I had heard about the rather vitriolic way GC people were to Ver2/Ver1 players back on SCHTServ but I didn't think it was THAT bad. :/ I think, if the bugs can be worked around and GC and PC/DC players can be able to play with each other on Altimira, then why the hell not? Smile Plus I like all the ideas you are putting out about different content and whatnot. I know you won't really ditch Ver2/Ver1 anyway: you've been at it WAAAAAY too long to jump ship now. Wink

As a possible idea, how about setting a period of time (3-6 months maybe?) as like a test run for allowing GC players to be able to play on Altimira? I'm all for seeing what happens with a bit of testing and experimenting! Very Happy If things run smoothly for the players, then all is well! But if there comes to be issues of players not being very nice consistently or things get borked on the back end of things (server or client issues and all that jazz), then I think that test period is perfect for determining if is feasible for Altimira.

Just my two cents of the (very) few hours I've been playing online on Altimira. Smile

I'd say sure why not?

Also wouldn't it be possible to just set Lobby 1 as the v2 lobby for GC users? (aka lobby 11)

To be clear, I'm not suggesting that any kind of stable cross-platform play is going to happen, because it isn't. The only way you can play with each other is for both the V2 and V3 player to use special commands to enable cross-platform teams as a way for both parties to acknowledge that they are willing to take the risks associated with playing together (which are mainly that your game is probably going to crash at some point). The teams you create won't be cross platform by default or anything like that; I'm just considering allowing GC to access the ship at all so that I can put new GC quests on the ship and let Iselia remain the "vanilla" ship for V1/2/3. Right now, GC can't even see Altimira in the list of ships, which is why you never see any GC players in the lobby.

I had thought of that before, but BlueCrab didn't want to mess up the lobby order for GC players. Razz

I would definitely feel better about the lobby interaction if we didn't have to watch people walking through walls and falling through the floor all the time, but GC players might be annoyed at being forced to change lobbies to see the "normal" ones to them. Razz

True that. Also, they could always have the "original experience" by visiting other ships. There's a ship for all tastes really. Iselia for eg. offers the most authentic Sega experience afaik, which is awesome for PSO purists...
Lets not forget that after all, Altimira is all about experimenting, expanding and giving an enhanced PSO experience. I say we go for it, no doubts whatsoever...

I got 3 more "Yes" votes online yesterday, so it looks like this is 6/0. Surprised

just being allowed to connect to the ship as a gc user would make me so happy. there's just something about ep1&2 for me, it was really disheartening to be barred from Altimira after playing PC for the time that i did.

so long as it doesn't cause issues for v1/2, i'd love to just be able to sit in the same lobby with an old dc friend (Electron I love you)

Well, nobody had a reason for why this shouldn't go forward, so GC can connect to Altimira now. Surprised
