Dreamcast Problem Empty Dreamcast Problem

Post  stasher Wed Jun 18, 2008 12:16 am

One of my DCs is old and doesn't work any more. It doesn't like to spin the disk properly and cannot load games. I've tried putting it on its side to play it, but that didn't work. I've tried recalibrating the laser, but that didn't work. It did, however, give me varied results. I've yet to play it upside down. (by the way, when it was starting to go bad, it didn't like to load any disk except for PSO cheers )

My main question is, how do I know for certain that the drive is completely shot? Should I just stick to recalibrating the laser. Does anybody have a pic of the proper- or close to proper- position of the recalibration screw?

I'd suggest you get your Dreamcast refurbished, if it can't spin the disc anymore moving the lense won't help you. Razz

It can spin the disk, sometimes very fast with the lid open Question

Also, there are numerous pages of people saying that their DC won't spin the disk any more and that the laser calibration fix worked for them!?

Lol that's totally nonsensical. If the disc doesn't spin that means the motor is dead, calibrating the lense won't fix that. Razz

I just told you, it DOES spin the disk. Depending on how I recalibrate the laser, it spins it in different ways. I think that if the laser doesn't pick up right away on what its supposed to read on the disk, then it spins in incorrectly... if you could see my DC you'd understand what I'm talking about. And since it doesn't sound like you know enough about how a DC works, don't throw guesses at me.

...Make up your mind? There's no need to get huffy. >_>

Keep playing with the pot, it's ultra sensitive you just have to find the right place. Be patient, it can take a while (shouldn't take more than half an hour though).

Sorry, I didin't want to sound angry, but that's hard to convey with just text and without the right words. I think there was a misunderstanding or that we were thinking of different "definitions" of if it can/does spin the disk.

Cab; okay, I'll keep at it.... but I think I might have screwed something up. The guy that gave instructions for recalibration showed that he used needle-nosed pliers. Stupid me, I used pliers and I think I accidentally pulled the "top" piece of metal out of shape. I pushed it back, but I think it's only there to keep the shape of a phillips-head screwdriver and not an actual contact- or whatever- that I need to worry about. Maybe you can confirm or deny this before I give up hope that I really screwed it up?

lol, use a small screwdriver. A pair of pliers will be way too hard to be accurate with.

I'm not sure what piece of metal you are talking about, but check to make sure you haven't damaged your ribbon cables.

Sad They are crimped a little. It's difficult to flip the laser part over evenly.
