The End of an Era Empty The End of an Era

Post  Aleron Ives Sun Aug 02, 2015 12:10 am

There isn't really an appropriate forum for this topic, so since it's basically an announcement about myself and the future of my relationship to the PSO community, I'm putting it here. For those of you who don't know, Crono finally posted on the SCHTServ forum to explain that the server's two months of downtime were because the HDD that contained all of the PSOBB character data crashed. He never made a backup (which raises serious questions as to how the donation money was being used), so he's asking all BB players to simply start over. This is the last straw regarding Crono's incompetence as an administrator in my opinion, and rather than continue to be part of an administration that has no problem with apparently embezzling donation funds and then asking for players' continued support, I have decided to resign from the SCHTServ staff. I'm not entirely confident that my post won't get deleted by one of Crono's cronies, so I'm reposting it here. Alas, a decade of service has come to an end.

Aleron Ives wrote:Well, this is disappointing, to say the least. I had hoped that the catastrophic server failure might prompt a change in leadership, but Crono has already confirmed that it won't be happening. Not only is he staying in charge, but the same people who naively donated their money under the illusion that it would support the game are apparently going to be duped into donating their money yet again to someone who is clearly not only unable but unwilling to administrate the server. It's true that nobody was ever forced to pay to play here, but it's also true that donations have been accepted for years under the pretense of keeping the server alive, and yet Crono didn't buy a single backup drive, and Lee has had to host the main ship himself, since the server no longer resided on a professional hosting service. If the donations weren't being used to ensure even the slightest degree of reliability or stability for the server's continued operation, then the donation funds have been grossly mishandled. This demonstrates an inexcusable level of negligence and incompetence that sadly confirms the donation system as the sham it was and Crono as the unfit leader many of us have always known him to be.

The same person who has refused to upload new quests, update the drop charts, fix the registration system, or even make sure the server was running at all, not only expects a simple, "Oops, sorry," to expunge his years of demeaning and abusing Schthack's legacy, but also has the gall to say that he genuinely loves keeping the server up for everybody? Actions speak louder than words, and Crono's track record indicates that this sentiment could not be further from the truth. At this point, the only action that would even come close to righting the wrongs Crono has inflicted upon the PSO community for years would be to release the server program (and its source code) so that somebody who actually cares about the game could prevent Schthack's hard work from being wasted under an administration based on corruption, fear, and greed. It's no surprise that talk is circulating about recruiting new staff members, as Crono has made sure to surround himself with people who will defend his indefensible actions to the bitter end and who will remove all staff members who dare to question him. Even Cranberry, the best and most upright GM we ever had, is not only summarily removed from office for opposing unfair policy changes but is officially rebuked for responding to people who explicitly thanked her by name for her service to the community.

I've been a part of the staff longer than anybody, and I've tried to be a force for reason on the forum in the years since Crono's refusal to support the Ver.2 community forced me to stop playing here, but I cannot sit silently while history repeats itself. Schthack's vision died a long time ago, and the thought that the shell of what was once the greatest (not to mention first) PSO server will simply return to business as usual with only a few empty promises of better conditions from someone whose word has no value makes me yearn for the days when Schthack was actively involved in making PSO players' lives better.

The fact that no meaningful administrative or policy changes are poised to take place sadly leads me to conclude that the server is beyond saving, and as such its salvation is surely beyond any contributions I could make.

I therefore resign as a member of the SCHTServ staff.

I would like to thank Schthack for letting me into the inner circle and allowing me to help test the server and his various tools over the years, Lee for providing his expertise in making so many of my own projects possible, and all the players who have expressed their appreciation of my efforts to support the game. I hope I was able, in some small measure, to improve the experience of our players during my time here.

Long live PSO, long live Schthack, and may SCHTServ's unscrupulous administration never again successfully swindle unsuspecting players out of their money. My time in the Axis of Evil staff has come to an end, but for those of you who may comprise the new guard of SCHTServ's management, may Dark Falz have mercy on your souls.

I'll just say that I don't blame you for resigning, and that your efforts in PSO development are very appreciated.

Cheers!

She already has an invitation, but she doesn't play PSO very much anymore. Sad

Cranberry and you should come up with a new quest. Maybe that would get her involved once more. Laughing

Sorry to hear about the mess at schtserv. I spent no small amount if time there myself, in the end i only played there because there were more folks online when i logged on. recently ive been on BB on another server, but it seems some "changes" may be happening there too, with some of the scht players joining there. maybe a fresh install of ver. 2 is in order.

Your contribution to the pso community is greatly appreciated! you've always been a great help to me when i play here.

I'm not surprised with things i've read when i first got into this community. I only played on SCHterv for a small amount of time before you teamed up with BlueCrab with Sylverant. However I think this a good thing, seeing as with the sylverant team you've been doing a lot more with work not only game wise but server side as well, not to mention it seems yours and BlueCrab's effort have been more appreciated.

I know I don't play much or log onto the forums much, but i do pop in from time to time to see whats going on and I gotta say I've, I'm glad you're still chuggin along. I've even gotten a few of my friends to play and we try to get on when have time. It's slow going since they're not big pc game players in the first place, but if i can get my gf to enjoy it and really doesnt play games at all, i think that not only says a lot about the game itself, but the effort you and your team have put into maintaining the server and providing players to enjoy this timeless classic.

Thank you.

Now that SCHTServ has officially died, I guess we're the last bastion for Ver.1 and 2. Surprised

Well written post. I assume it was immediately removed from the Schtserv boards? Such a shame how it all played out with that server, but it was a shell of its former self and what died was not the server/community Schthack left Chrono with.

Coming to Bluecrabs server was a good choice, and I think in the long run this Server will be able to stand the test of time for the truly dedicated PSO fanbase. Right now everyone is a bit scattered and segregated, but eventually people will start to settle into their respective choice of server. I hope some old staff members show up on this server, but I understand if they just wanna move on at this point. We have been doing this PSO thing for 15 years, and especially in the PC/DC section we are a small group. But a Dreamcast homebrew vet hosting the last playable space for original PSO, I don't think I'd rather have it any other way.

Daawww... Making me feel all warm and fuzzy inside (which is especially good considering how cold it is here these past few days Razz ).

I hope to continue being able to provide everyone a place to play for as long as they want to.

BlueCrab, dude, you seriously deserve a LOT of props for what you do! You and Aleron Ives both truly deserve all the respects and cookies! Smile

I...am not surprised about what happened at Schthack. Many years ago (I think it's been almost 4 years since I last logged into BB?), even I realized that Chrono was pretty much incompetent and that's coming from a guy who barely even lurked on the forums but had seen what it was even then. I can only imagine how much crap you (Aleron Ives) had to deal with considering you were part of the administration for as long as you were.

It truly is a damn shame that Schthack has fallen as far as it has the way it has. I didn't even know what was going on since I hadn't even popped in there in years but an hdd failure? And NO backup at all? That's beyond incompetence. That's beyond pathetic. I can't even think of just how terrible that is. Even though I only had a level 68 character and hadn't logged in in years, I'm a lil sad to see that my character is gone.

It truly is the end of an era. I can't even imagine how many people will either give up BB permanently after losing thousands of hours worth of items, time, blood, sweat and tears or just sucking it up and just starting a clean slate all over again. That's a very big pill to swallow. I can't imagine having spent that much time grinding only to have everything rendered to moot. That's just painful.

I know I don't pop in here much at all, especially lately, but I do love to see what kind of things you are doing and I will always, always appreciate your hard work and dedication Aleron Ives, and you too, BlueCrab. Wink
