So I got a new PC earlier tonight, and I'm tinkering and setting stuff up..

Basically, none of the pso.exe files are working for me, I'll load them from Autorun, from online.offline, from Deathrabbit's loader, and always the same result, the window/fullscreen presence appears briefly, then immediately closes, no error boxes of any kind. x.x

EDIT: Forgot to mention earlier, this is on Windows 8.1, 64 bit

It sounds like a UAC problem to me. Is the UAC enabled? Are you running pso.exe (and possibly the loader) as an administrator?

On other note, have you run the DirectX web updater? Windows 7 apparently doesn't come with the latest D3D9 for some reason, so you still have to update it. I've read that Windows 8 may have removed D3D8, which is what PSO uses. You might want to check that you have the D3D8 DLLs on your system.

You should have d3d8.dll and d3d8thk.dll in Windows\SysWOW64.

Why don't you try windowed mode?

I have tried both windowed and fullscreen with every pso.exe provided here, all the same result.

Rawr typos...

I don't provide any files for PSO2. Razz

Have you tried disabling your Antivirus or telling it to ignore the PSO folder? You could also check the event viewer after PSO crashes to see what the error message is.

Ok, rather, I've tried every pso.exe found at the main site.

Anyway, never thought about the event viewer.. I'll give that a try after I can remember how to find it.. and after I get done with babysitting.. XD

Edit: eat my typos D:

Why are you calling it pso2.exe? If that's the filename, that's why it doesn't work. The name should be pso.exe. Phantasy Star Online 2 is a different game.

Yeah, I apparently can't just type "PSO" today for some reason.. XD
I've been tinkering with both games for two days at this point.
If I actually meant to be talking about PSO2, I wouldn't be putting it here. Razz

Anyway, I tried looking in the event viewer, and.... I have no idea what I should be doing or looking for there.

....  I normally think to try that, because I have a history of being lazy to update certain programs with new OS's, but I never once thought about it for this.. XD

EDIT: That didn't work either.. but thanks for bringing it up!

Run PSO and let it crash, and then open the event viewer. It should say that at least 1 error occurred in the last hour. Click the + to open the list of errors, and you'll see a list of error types. Double click on them one by one to go to the error log for that particular type of error, and eventually you should find one saying that pso.exe crashed. It may or may not have useful information as to why the crash happened, but you could also gain information by looking at other errors and warnings that have the same timestamp as when PSO crashed, as they might be related.

About the only other thing I might suggest is to redownload the entire pso pc torrent and retry the instructions in the readme file. Perhaps some of the files are incompatible. But these are just straw-grasps. Maybe windows8 doesn't like psopc

I've got the same Windows version as you and it works. Don't know why you're having trouble, but there should be a solution.

If that's the case, the only thing I can think of, besides trying to run the game with antivirus disabled, would be to start disabling other background processes and services to see if one of them is causing a conflict.

This actually is a fresh install from scratch, and.. There's nithong in the event viewer about it, just retried right before posting this, and the only error about is something about a store license synch failure.

Sounds like an antivirus problem... Maybe give permissions to exclude pso.exe.

If you're not seeing the "pso.exe has stopped working" type error and can't find any pso.exe crashes in the application log, then it isn't crashing: another program is probably blocking and closing it.

I don't see what it would be, I've even gone and disabled all antivirus, firewalls, and similar that I have on here, and still get the same results.. I suppose I'll just keep tinkering. XD

Would posting a copy of my process list or something of the sort maybe help shed some light on the issue?

Maybe, but the culprit could be anything. How many processes do you usually have? I have 31 in the background if you count audidg.exe before it goes to sleep. You never said if you updated your DirectX. Did you download the DX web updater and run it to make sure you have all the latest DLLs? You might also try a GPU driver update.

the web updrader said I already had a newer or current version installed, and I haven't tried updating my GPU drivers yet, might do that tomorrow, heading to bed now.

If it's going to be much more of a hassle, I'll just put this off until later, the game runs quite well on my other machine... Which I'll still need for other purposes anyway.
