PSO PC and Steam Overlay?

Post  aaron_yume on Wed Jul 06, 2011 2:45 am

Has anyone managed to add a working PSO PC shortcut to Steam via the none-steam game shortcuts and also get the steam overlay to work while playing PSO?

I'm quite interested in doing this but I just can't seem to get it to work... Any ideas?

I thought Steam was just a way for people to download games + spyware, but according to Wikipedia, apparently it has communication functions now. I believe some people have made patches for BB to support Xfire, but I don't think anyone has done the same for PC. I think if you want messaging abilities while playing PC, your only option is to use window mode and either TeamSpeak or your IM client/protocol of choice.

Yeah I was wondering about Steam as well, but nope, I haven't heard anything about it. So I'm stuck using windowed mode. It would be nice if they had an overlay and what have you. I'd like to take some screenshots with it.

Also, Ives, Steam has had communications capabilities for awhile now XD

Changing the steam shortcut to "...PSO/autorun.exe" -s I can get it to run via the shortcut in steam but the overlay isn't working for me at all though (this is on Windows 7 x64). The overlay is running fine with my other games so no idea why it doesn't seem to function with PSO PC. I'm using a vanilla no mods at all install as well (apart from changing my hosts file to point it to other servers that is).

**EDIT**

I've finally got it working but the overlay only works if you download and use the online_offline.exe instead of the original autorun.

Also before I forget again could someone seed the PSOPC Music pack for me?

The overlay is quite useful really as you are able to browse the net, use steams instant messenger, voice chat and screenshots (although PSO can do this itself) while in full screen mode without ever needing to alt-tab out which is quite buggy with PSO PC at least. Although I tend to run Skype for voice chat in the background if I'm playing any online games as Skype overall seems to have the best quality service out of all the free voice communication programs out there.

Why would you want to use the autorun, anyway? You have to waste time with the intro movie that doesn't usually work and connecting to the patch server every time you want to launch the game. It's annoying. Mad

I was using the autorun for the longest time until i read what aaron_yumi wrote. Though i never had to deal with the intro (which also worked fine for me) since i ticked it off in the options menu. However, yay for steam over lay. Thanks aaron for the tip ^^.

EDIT: Hmmm I did come across a problem though...When i use the offline_online.exe I can't type in game...However with the autorun, I can...Any ideas? I'm using XP if that helps.

Have you disabled Advanced Text Services on pso.exe? (Right click on it and select "Properties".)

ATS is the only cause of being unable to type on XP, to my knowledge.

I've never come across any text inputting problems but then I always have IME running and my non-unicode programs set to Japanese because well I use a lot of Japanese software and require to be able to type in Japanese. But really it's unobtrusive to run in the background and I would think it would solve your input issues.

The odd thing is, I don't have a problem with this, using the autorun.exe, only when i use the online_offline.exe. but I guess i could play with the IME a little later and see how that fairs, even though I'm using XP... =/

Have you tried deathrabbit's loader to see if that works?
