V1 Legit Group Sign Up Here

Post  DoctorN on Sat Mar 26, 2011 6:43 pm

this group im starting is for the original (THE ORIGINAL!) phantasy star online game. not episode 1 and 2, not bb, not c.a.r.d, and not v2 (NOT V2!). its all about

so leave upon reading this line!

so, i think the server should get some of them things for v1 too! quests, etc. v1 appreciation days, a v1 themed quest, even v1 themed merchandise. I know you think im crazy, and i probably have because theres no dial-up in arizona and theres no bba's to get, if there was a way to build one for less the price of a bba and have it registered as one, i would build it.

I think (afaik) you, me, seby, seby's brother, saffo, and Ives are the only ones here with legit v1s. As it stands right now, only one of those people actually uses their copy.

You also need to realize that most of the stuff we get on v2 simply does not work on v1; v1 just cannot support it because it's not in the game's code. v1 is really a novelty more than anything else (I can't even use mine because I have too many serials registered in my DC and it corrupts any character I make on it).

Take Frantic Fauna, for example. v2 gets slowdown from it. If v1 were to have it ported, the lag would be even worse. And v1 cannot even get any of the prizes from said quest--ALL of them are red-named (i.e. hard-coded in v2 only) and 2 of the 6 are only obtainable through ultimate mode. Same goes for Prospective Horizons; I don't think v1 even has the spaceship or the palace. Seeing how this is true, how can v1 possibly get anything new?

Not to mention, you might be the only person who seriously uses v1. What's the point of going through all the trouble to make new things for possibly just one person on the entire planet? It's just not practical, not to mention v1 physically cannot support half the stuff v2 can.

It's like comparing Windows 3.1 to Windows XP. Windows 3.1 had better DOS compatibility and much faster startup times, but that was it. Yes, you can use Windows 3.1 nowadays, but just barely--it's a novelty. Windows XP supports a billion times more things than 3.1 and is more stable. Keyword there: v2 is more stable.

I'm not saying v2 is better than v1, I'm just stating the plain, un-ignorable facts. If you want to use Windows 3.1 (=v1), go ahead, just don't expect Microsoft (= Ives and BlueCrab) to provide anything for it.

lol i actually have windows 3.1 and i use it sometimes. believe it or not unofficial support was dropped for it in 2008 because many "cash tills" still used it.

i feel bad when i burn a dreamcast game, i dont know why, something expensive like marvel vs capcom 2 doesnt phase me, i dont know how to explain it though.

Even worse then someone who has killed (many) people?

For some reason I feel as if this is going to turn out to be a BB community vs v2 community.. except v2 vs v1 >_>

Note that I still provide full support for running v1 on the server, and for a good half a month when the server was under development that was the only version that was supported. Also note that the one "new" quest on Iselia (Global Warming) has full v1 support as well.

Just wanted to point it out, since someone decided to say I was Microsoft, or something.... Laughing

Is this a v1 preference or is v1 all you have? I can see you case and support you if you want the v1 "feel" but if you are playing v1 because it is all you have. I will send or buy you a 360 wired controller or another PC pad. I'll even send you PSO PC on a few CDs if you have craptastic satalite net with the controller. I'm serious.

If you are supporting the DC with your v1 though by all means have at it!

Re: V1 Legit Group Sign Up Here

Post  Aleron Ives on Sun Mar 27, 2011 1:09 am

I actually could port Resurgent Darkness to Ver.1 (although the slowdown would be pretty severe, and the maps would need gimping), and Lost HELL PALLASCH would work with fairly minor modifications.

As for Moop's point about Ver.1 having few players, it's not really "pratical" to design new quests for Ver.2, either. It has very few players, too. Wink I do this because I enjoy it, and it's worth it to me even though not many people play the game anymore. Isn't the "your game is old and inferior, upgrade now" line what GC and BB players gave us before we came to Sylverant? Let's be careful not to discriminate. Both BlueCrab and I try to support Ver.1. Now that I've finished my latest quest, I may actually port some of the others to Ver.1 that I can port when I've gotten some rest from this latest quest development ordeal. I don't want to discriminate against Ver.1; this site is for Ver.1 and 2, after all. It's not a choice to withhold content from Ver.1; it's a matter of Ver.1 not supporting much content, and unfortunately, Ver.1 supports only the most basic of quests.

When I was first learning to make quests, I made ones that were fairly simple and straightforward, but I've tried to challenge myself and make each new quest more interesting and elabourate than the last. When someone asks if a quest can be "ported" to Ver.1, that's not entirely a straightforward question. I'll go more into detail since you apparently want me to explain. Are you ready for a wall of text? Good.

When you consider whether a quest can be ported, you have to look at what the quest does and how much of that is important to what it's like to play the quest. Sega added abilities to every version of PSO that previous versions did not have. This includes both opcodes (commands) that can be used in the script, as well as creating new objects that can be placed on the map, plus making certain objects possible to use on more floors than before.

Fragments of a Memory is an execellent example of what I mean. It was originally a BB quest, and I ported it to Ver.2. When I did this, I had to remove certain things. When you get caught by the ghosts in Ruins 3 on BB, all the enemies freeze while you see the message where the ghosts tell you to turn back. After you get returned to the beginning of Ruins 3, the enemies get unfrozen.

The command to freeze enemies in a GC opcode. You will FSOD/crash if you use it, because there is no such opcode on Ver.2. The question was: Is having the enemies get frozen when you get caught by the ghosts important? The answer: Not really. If you're worried about getting killed while the message is up, click through it quickly before you die.

What about porting the quest to Ver.1? Well, here's what you'd have to remove to make it work:

The room with the three warps in Ruins 1 are randomized, which means you never know which warp will send you where every time you play the quest. You would have to remove that and make the warps static on Ver.1, because the command to generate a random number is a Ver.2 opcode. The random warps in Ruins 1 would kind of suck if they were gone, but perhaps it's not a huge concern.

Next, there's "dummy switch" in Ruins 2 that causes the timer to appear and forces you to find the buttons to open the last door. You can't tie a scripted event to a switch in Ver.1, so that would have to either be removed, or it would have to be triggered some other way. One possible way to do it would be to have the timer automatically appear when you clear the room where the switch normally is, but then you would no longer have the ability to decide when the timer should start -- it would happen automatically as soon as you cleared the room. That would be a little annoying, but technically it would still work.

Finally, there's the ghosts themselves in Ruins 3. You can't do ghosts in Ver.1, because they rely on two Ver.2 commands to function. One of them detects your location, which is necessary in order to put the ghosts in the right spot. Without that command, there's no way for PSO to know where you are in the map, so the ghosts can't appear near you. The other command you need is one that detects what a player is doing. The ghosts advance towards you if you move, attack, use a Technique, or die. They retreat if you stand still, lie on the floor after getting hit, or use an item. Without the command to detect what a player is doing, there's no way for the ghosts to know when to advance and when to retreat, so they won't work at all. The ghosts are an integral part of Ruins 3, and without them, Ruins 3 would be a completely different experience.

That's what I mean when I say something can't be ported to Ver.1. The problems in Ruins 1 and Ruins 2 are somewhere between minor and moderate, but removing the ghosts from Ruins 3 completely changes the quest, because the ghosts are what makes Ruins 3 difficult and different from just a normal Ruins run in free play. Because removing them would drastically alter the quest, Fragments of a Memory cannot be ported to Ver.1.

Like it or not, Ver.1 is essentially a glorified public beta of PSO. When Sega released it, they knew Ver.2 was going to be released later, but they apparently wanted to get more feedback from players before they released the entire game. It's pretty obvious that Ver.1 was created backwards from Ver.2 because of things like the level cap and experience. Ver.1 caps your level at 100, but your character continues to gain experience after you reach level 100, because Ver.1 still has the entire Ver.2 experience table from level 1 - level 200; you just don't level up anymore after you reach level 100.

All quests (even those on GC and BB) rely on the Ver.1 opcodes to perform basic functions; they are essentially the backbone of quest creation. Unfortunately, all the commands that let you do interesting things were added to Ver.2 or Ver.3. Ver.2 also has limitations, and some quests on Ver.3 cannot be ported to Ver.2 because they contain things that won't work; the difference is that Ver.1's limitations are so much more vast than those of Ver.2, that Ver.1 can do practically nothing. Pretty much all you can do in a Ver.1 quest is kill stuff, set a timer, and fight or team up with NPC characters. Since NPCs don't work in multiplayer quests, the only thing you can do in a Ver.1 quest that separates it from free play is have a timer.

Didn't you ever wonder why Ver.1 only has the four Mop-up Operation quests, the four Endless Nightmare quests, and the three Hopkins quests? Those quests don't really do much of anything that's different from free play, except that the Mop-up quests have timers. The reason those are the only quests Ver.1 has is because Ver.1 doesn't support anything more complex than what those quests offer.

Also, Moop is correct. Because Spaceship and Palace were designed for use in Battle mode and Ver.1 doesn't have Battle mode, those areas don't even exist in Ver.1, so Prospective Horizons literally is impossible to port. It's like trying to port a Seabed quest from GC to Ver.2; you can't play a quest in an area that doesn't exist in your game.

With all that in mind, I will say again that Frantic Fauna requires Ver.2. Razz

There, now don't you feel educated? You deserve a cookie if you read all of that. Very Happy

Wait, since Mop up 4 on VH drops badges and those were in v2, what will v1 players see them as? as ???? items I assume?

I remember Lee saying something that V1 was originally gonna have Challenge Mode and Battle Mode but was removed for unknown reasons. If you do find the beta trailer, you can see somewhere in that footage that the door from C-mode is there.

Runs perfectly on my end, Windows 7 ultimate x64 @ 1920x1440. Unless you absolutely can't stand the 360 (which I truly understand as I used to play psopc with it, it was big and bulky and could never use the second analog for menus.) and prefer the dreamcast controller.. I have no honest idea what to tell you, unless you get a ps2 with an adapter or a ps3 controller. but MEH

The Ver.1 copy of the quest has no badges, and you're forced to load Ver.1 quests if you make a Ver.1 team. If you drop a badge for a Ver.1 player, it will show up as a different item, just like Ver.2 weapons show up as different weapons.

I use a 360 pad or my Logitech PS2 shaped thing I got at best buy awhile back...the nice one not that cheap 9$ POS. I also have a a DC to usb adapter and that does...okay. And if I want to be really retro I have an offical Saturn style usb controller I imported. I don't see why you have windows 7 issues did you copy over the windows 7 PSO.exe and stuff found here on the website?

If they aren't working for you, (I had this issue) I can give you a link to the DC talk hosted PSO.exe, autorun, and online for silverant or just send them to you.
