So now I can enjoy pso in 480p. It is a HUUUUUUGE improvement over standard composite. Now I've only got 1 problem... On my 32" HDTV, the 640x480 vga input shows up as a small 4" box in the middle of the screen, where the composite cables were in normal 4:3. Anyone have any ideas on what I could do to make it bigger while keeping its quality (meaning, no stretching)? Is plugging it into a PC monitor the only thing I can do?

Congratulation on that! The VGA is really a plus for the DC as you're now playing as its meant to be played.

Hmm.. I also play PSO on an 32''HDtv from LG, and what I can say is that I use the tv controller to change its aspect ratio to a bigger size. Try messing around with it, I'm sure you'll find it. Cool

The problem is that by using a VGA cable, you're outputting a formatted VGA image, and the TV is displaying it 1:1. The image is small because the resolution of the TV is much higher than the resolution of the image. The only way to make it fill the screen is to stretch it, and most TVs have some sort of zoom function to enlarge standard definition content to fill the screen.

That's what I was afraid of... So to keep the original 480p quality I would need a pc monitor designed for resolutions like that?

@Treamcaster
Thanks Smile It's really fantastic.

The only way to not stretch the image is to use a monitor that does not support resolutions higher than 640x480, which is impossible because that resolution has been obsolete for years. Such a monitor would literally have only 640 horizonal pixels and 480 vertical ones, which would mean each pixel would be huge if the monitor was even somewhat large. Every monitor and HDTV is going to stretch the image. There is no quality loss from enlarging the image, a larger image just makes the crappiness of VGA more apparent because it's a low resolution.

So then, I can't hook it up to my DOS machine and use that as the screen? It only supports 640x480, but I'm not sure if hooking a DC to a laptop's vga port would let me use the laptop's screen as a monitor...

The VGA port on a laptop is an output, not an input.

I finally figured this out. My room was redone, and there happened to be an old Magnavox flatscreen LCD TV that supports 640x480 to 1024x768 (@ 60hz only) in my attic. Very Happy Since it doubles as both a pc monitor AND a TV, I'm in luck. Only thing is, it's a 15" screen... No fancy hugeness for me...
