How are the free ISPs?

Like everything else "free", I'd imagine crap. The first one on the list seemed ok though; didn't ask for my credit card or anything like that. Just my email and zip code. How would it work for someone only going on occasionally though? It only has one number to dial, which I'm almost positive is not good, but would it be ok if I were only to go on say, twice a month?

Or would it just be better off to shell out the 7-13 dollars a month for a real ISP?

UniDUNs suck ass. I got sick of them seeing as they generally die after a few weeks or months, cause frequent disconnections, and also usually have a time limit like an automatic 10 minute disconnect. Don't waste your time, a real ISP is far better if you actually care about playing online.

I started using CityStar and never regretted it. It was far more stable.

I dunno if it works (my DC is at school, and there's a snowbank taller than me between me and the school right now), but I've heard it's possible to set up a PPP server in Linux and use the Linux box as a router between the modem and WAN. Has anybody tried that? If not, I'll try it in a few days when I get back...

I presume you are talking about a PC-DC server? Most people use Windows 98 + Winroute for that, but I imagine there's tools on Linux that would work as well.

Heh, you know me. Windows isn't really my thing. Besides, I can only get copies of XP and later to use for that kind of stuff.

Yeah, there are programs in Linux that allow PPP networking. I just don't have a Dreamcast on hand to play with. [facepalm]
